Introducing Ron Carlson
From ASU Research Magazine (Spring 2005)

Ron Carlson sets an example for his students about what being a writer is all about. The message comes through clearly: Writing is work.

Whether he's in a smallish Milwaukee bookstore or at the Arizona Book Festival, Ron Carlson observes perfect author etiquette in signing his books. He turns to the title page, writes a personalized note for the reader, draws a slash through his printed name, and then replaces it with his autograph.

At book signings, he rolls up his sleeves, adjusts his tie, and unleashes a dynamism that carries him through not only a reading of his fiction but the snaking line of readers waiting for a special moment with the author who recently published a nearly 500-page volume of his selected stories, a landmark for any writer.

Readings, book signings, and, in general, hanging out with his books are what Carlson calls the "gravy" in his life as a writer. His summers are often peppered with cross-country appearances.

"You need to understand that the life of a writer is the life of a writer," he says. "You're really not a bookseller. You should never ever mistake that as your work. It's fun. Take the ride and enjoy it, but don't think that because you stood and shook hands that you're a writer."
